What are the requirements to become a Zoo Keeper?

  • Certificate III in Captive Animal Management (or equivalent), or the ability to enrol in the course.
  • Knowledge and experience in captive husbandry and exhibit design.
  • Knowledge of animal training and conditioning practices.
  • Demonstrated customer service ethos.
  • Demonstrated presentation and communication skills
  • Hold a current NSW Class C Drivers Licence.
  • Hold or have the ability to gain a Class A&B Firearms Licence
  • Other specific criteria dependent on the role.

What assessment methods are used by the ZPB?

Depending on the position, there are a variety of assessment tools that the ZPB use including:

  • Structured interviews
  • Group activities
  • Presentations
  • Written and/or numeracy tests
  • Work tests (practical assessments)

These tools are often used in assessment centres and a variety can be used at any one time.

How long will the recruitment process take before a decision is made?

The ZPB is a government agency is bound by legislation and regulations. Before a final decision can be made the required pre-employment checks need to be processed. These checks can take a minimum of two weeks to be processed. The Human Resources Officer will keep you updated on the progress of your application.
