Eudyptula minor novaehollandiae

The ZPB is an active participant in the Little Penguin Recovery Program for the Manly population. Although common in South Australia, this colony is the only known breeding colony on mainland NSW and has been listed as endangered. The objectives of the program are to maintain and enhance the population through research, education, protection of the colony and its habitat and increase community awareness and involvement.

All other mainland colonies in NSW have been lost due to human interference, foxes and other introduced species. This project includes a 'breed-for-release' component, and also includes local community education and advocacy programs.

This commitment recently expanded into providing captive bred Little Penguins for release in the wild population in Manly.  Six captive bred Little Penguins were released during the 2004/05 breeding season.
