NAIDOC Celebrations at Taronga

Taronga Zoo's annual NAIDOC celebration was held from 30th June to 20th July 2008 and was a huge success. NAIDOC celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, their history, culture and achievements.

Visitors experienced the engaging Animals of the Dreaming QBE Free Flight Bird Show. Co-presented by our Aboriginal staff, they heard ancient stories of Animal Dreaming while witnessing our beautiful and talented native birds in flight. The show immersed visitors within traditional Aboriginal culture, music and the Dreaming, creating an awareness and appreciation of Aboriginal culture, native animals and the land.

The daily Bush Tucker Talk explored how for thousands of years Aboriginal people have used plants for food, tools, medicine and in ceremony. Held at Backyard to Bush, visitors learnt about native Australian bush foods and their importance to Aboriginal people.

Visitors and staff showed their support for reconciliation by participating in The Sea of Hands, where they planted a hand in the ground to form a giant Rainbow Serpent across the Condor Lawns just near the Bird Show Theatre.

NAIDOC Week celebrations for 2009 will be held from 5 to 12 July.
