Panthera tigris sumatrae
Sumatran Tigers are the smallest of all tigers. They have sharp, curved claws for grabbing and holding prey and large canine teeth for inflicting the ‘death bite' to the neck of large prey. Usually solitary, males mark and protect their territory, which contains up to five females.
Taronga is home to two Sumatran Tigers. In October 2003, Assiqua, our female, who was born in France, produced three beautiful cubs. The male cubs once fully grown left home and now live in New Zealand. Their sister, Jumilah, still lives with her mum but will soon meet a handsome male tiger called Satu. Assiqua meanwhile will move to Adelaide Zoo to meet her new match also.
