Orang-utan

Pongo pygmaeus

The Orang-utan is the largest tree-dwelling animal in the world. It is highly intelligent and has even been taught to communicate using sign language in captivity. Usually solitary, females form long, close bonds with their offspring. The name ‘Orang-utan' comes from the Malay Orang hutan, meaning ‘man of the forest'.

Taronga Zoo has two Orang-utans: male Jantan and female Willow. Their rainforest exhibit is a haven of cascading water and views of the harbour. A high tower at equal height with the Sky Safari cable car is Jantan's favourite sitting spot.
