Malayan Tapir

Tapirus indicus

Tapir

The Tapir's striking pattern breaks up its outline in the dim light of its jungle habitat, making it difficult to see. It has a short trunk which it uses to pull leaves into its mouth and as a ‘snorkel' when it submerges underwater to hide from danger.

Taronga Zoo's two Malayan Tapirs Denise and Berani love to be brushed. Not only is it enjoyable but it gives zoo staff the perfect opportunity to check their feet, eyes and general health. Denise gave birth to the first Malayan Tapir calf born in Australia in 1999 - Semangka - who now lives at Melbourne Zoo.
