Hydrurga leptonyx
Leopard Seals live almost exclusively on the pack ice of the Antarctic. The female is a truly unique mammal that sings to attract males during the breeding season and is significantly larger than the males. Their large, powerful jaw and upper body is used for fighting off unwanted males.
Leopard Seals are being studied in the Antarctic by the Australian Marine Mammal Research Centre (AMMRC) in conjunction with Taronga Zoo as a method of monitoring the Southern Ocean environment. As top-order predators within the Antarctic ecosystem, fluctuations in the Antarctic environment at all levels will be reflected in Leopard Seal populations.
