Communicating with a wide range of calls, it is the meerkats' teamwork that ensures their survival. Females take turns at caring for a crèche of young. Individuals take turns at guard duty, standing on their hind legs on higher ground to watch out for danger.
Taronga Zoo has ten meerkats - five males and five females. At the head of all meerkat families is the breeding pair. Our current meerkat group has just been introduced to each other and so things should get pretty exciting soon for visitors and staff alike as the meerkats jostle for the top position in the group. Once the dominant pair emerges the pitter patter of tiny baby meerkat feet shouldn't be too far behind them.
