School Work Experience

Taronga Zoo's Work Experience program is for school students who are interested in pursuing a career in Zoo-keeping, animal care or zoo horticulture. The program is voluntary, unpaid and for school students in Years 10, 11 and 12.

One successful applicant per school will be assigned to a zoo animal division for one week's duration (Monday through Friday), excluding school and public holidays.

Careers Advisers and students are required to read the work experience information package.

Indigenous students

Taronga Zoo employs an Aboriginal Education Officer who contributes to creating a welcoming and supportive learning environment for Indigenous students.

Students with special needs

Taronga Zoo accepts students with special needs, providing support is available and students are suitable for particular Zoo work areas. Please contact the Education Centre staff to discuss necessary arrangements.

 Taronga Zoo's Work Experience divisions may include:

  • Marine Mammals
  • Australian Mammals
  • Australian and Farm Animals
  • Carnivores
  • Birds
  • Ungulates & Primates
  • Reptiles and Amphibians
  • Horticulture
  • Veterinary & Quarantine Centre

The successful student is placed on one division for one week, subject to the availability of that division.

The 2010 program is closed.

Ultimately your school will approve the work experience placement so please direct all of your communication to the school Careers Adviser. Please do not contact the zoo as our arrangements are also subject to the school calendar and we will be required to contact the school.
